you welcome friends to our second class in a home with theosophy we are exploring this book dat cosmos and men some selected chapters the book has more more chapters than what we are going to be able to go through but I tried to Cho Tuesday one side arm or maybe more of interest to you all so last time we talked about the celestial hierarchies of beings which it's talking a little about the the consciousness aspect of the universe and how consciousness manifests in different beings beginning from the spiritual hierarchies and then as we are going to see later down to human beings and other entities and today we are going to explore the the matter aspect of this so how the cosmic matter begins last time was the cosmic consciousness now the cosmic matter so one of the names as we are going to see today that is used for this cosmic matter is acacia acacia is a sanskrit name and and then the astral light is something that is also frequently found in theosophical literature which as we are going to see say lower aspect of Akasha so that's what we are going to explore today so let us start Jeffrey farting says occult science lays before the student certain facts of nature which are unknown to the science of today until a person develops within himself the faculties necessary to corroborate the teaching he may take these facts as hypothesis which as we will see may help to many times we talk about things that are beyond our perception and how do do we relate to these things is this a revelation that came from God or a garland that we have to take you know just the world is round and very few of us have actually seen something that that can show you in a direct way that the world is round or we believe that there are atoms but many very few of us have actually seen some direct proof of these atoms however scientists and people who research all this they have done the experiments they have gone you know to the moon for example and they have seen that the globe is actually round and we take what they say as coming from an unalloyed which may make sense or not because we have to remember that science is many times also mistaken so in a similar way all these these teachings we can take them as coming from some kind of spiritual scientists which again you may trust a personal and say if a person is saying this there must be something there but that doesn't mean that is free from mistakes or errors or that is not explained in the best possible way or that you are not understanding this in an incorrect way you cannot you know really discard all these things so the best way to approach the Theosophical teachings especially in the aspects that are we go beyond our perception he said as a hypothesis and see if this helps to have a different view of the world to understand certain things that are difficult to understand that otherwise etc so that's the foundation and he says the facts under consideration here our first the existence of a primordial substance Akasha that manifests after a long night or pralaya pralaya is also a Sanskrit word that means dissolution so there is a root substance that manifests after the long night or pralaya of the universe that is the name that the first point and second they graduate gradations of this substance throughout the place of nature causing our physical globe for example to be enveloped in the lower of these grades and turned in this literature as the astral light so the first point is that the recent primordial substance from which everything comes science is getting there at the beginning there or at the beginning meaning a few centuries ago there was the idea that there were add atoms of different elements composing everything that we saw around but all those atoms there is a root substance now that roots at root substance in the Theosophical view is not really physical it goes far deeper than the physical dimension meaning if we keep breaking down the the atoms and seen more deeper and deeper subatomic particles at some point we will get to the particle that is the the ultimate component of the physical plane but we are not going to get to the bottom of the universe we get only to the bottom of the physical plane then there are six more planes with matter in different degrees of subtle tea that that are beyond or are deeper into reality so when sometimes in quantum physics they hope to find the ultimate particle and find God or the matrix of the universe that is that may be true only in what what relates to the physical plane but there are further planes to go beyond that so that is the first point and the idea of the night of the universe in the Theosophical approach sees the universe as in a kind of cyclic model so the universe develops and then it gets to a point where it begins to dissolve and then they disappear of rest and then there is a further development and then rest again so there is this kind of cyclic universe and after each period of rest this route substance manifests and is the basis for all kind of matter on all planes that we see around and one of the characteristics or one of the forms of this differentiation is what is called the astra light we are going to see later so he says the first fact affirmed in esoteric science is as given in the first fundamental principle of the secret doctrine the one absolute reality the omnipresent eternal boundless an immutable principle and manifest without attributes beyond the power of the human mind to conceive or of human language to describe so the idea here is they all seem different but the gold is not really affected by the form that that gold is taken you are not affecting the atoms of gold so this this ultimate reality is not really affected by how all the diversity that is that we see in the universe and this both from from the side of consciousness or matter there is also a not an absolute consciousness that is the foundation of all the different states of consciousness we go through our day and many others and this ultimate eternal immutable foundation is what we really are and part of a spiritual path is to realize that aspect of ourselves that is immutable that absolute reality in ourselves the beyond the changing thoughts that change in emotions that change in sensations so there is a question here that's the universe itself evolved in each cycle and yes the ideas at each new universe is is more evolved whatever that means at that level than the previous universe so there is a further ability to show spirit within matter after each cycle of evolution but really we cannot understand what that really means we can play with words about that but you know it's really hard to understand what a more evolved universe would be so that is the first principle then periodically he says in accordance with universal law the process of manifestation begin again the processes of manifestation begin again in a you a new universe with all the beings that comprise it emerges from the new Vanek pralaya for another period of activity so these are the two principles we were talking about there is a foundation that is immutable determine the root of everything and then periodical manifestations of these dissolute reality that manifests in different forms of matter and consciousness the originating one is described as the subject and object these two poles these two you know opposite aspects should not be regarded as independent realities but as the two facets or aspects of the absolute in Hinduism they call we are talking about duality or about diversity whenever there is a difference between subject and object subject is the the entity that perceives object is the the object of perception whenever we we come out of this absolute reality there is always duality in the universe and both duality and unity are two aspects of the reality but one is transitory the duality source for something in the ones of moving forward and having some kind of direct realization of this all right so he was talking about the that whenever we perceive as subject and an object we perceive reality in a in a dualistic way duality is the basis of of diversity so nature therefore is pervaded by duality in the physical world of our experience it is recognized in the polarity of active power energy or force on the one hand and passive mother on the other in the positive and negative in electricity in male and female functions in the natural world around us in the north and south poles of the magnet so it seems that whenever there is a form there is some kind of duality the manifested universe has that particular characteristic that manifestation comes in as two aspects of something in duels or in dudes so for example we have the one absolute that is beyond any duality and it is selling the philosophical literature that both what we call spirit and what we call matter they are both aspects of the absolute so the the absolute I think both beyond then after the absolute we we have these two aspects and we have that there is a kind of consciousness for example from spirit you can see that there are different aspects there so one of them is consciousness another aspect is that of subject another aspect is that of the positive pole for example positive in the sense of active another aspect is the active you know whatever is active in in nature and also mail and again again this doesn't mean mail in the sense of men and woman and the idea is that anything that is as active in in nature is normally symbolically shown as a male aspect and everything that is passive in the sense of nurturing and embracing and you know guarding that is called female it's probably the symbolism came you know in early societies because they mail is the one that went out and I don't know hunt the animals and the female stay at home and nourished everything so and the idea of matter is that it represents the other opposites to consciousness you always need a body to express consciousness a subject of perception always need an object to perceive when there is nothing to be perceived there is no consciousness there you know for example when we fall in deep sleep when there are no dreams or anything we we think that we are unconscious simply because there is nothing to be perceived so if there is nothing to be perceived we fall into unconsciousness and so the subject requires an object and positive and negative I'll give impulsive one male and female so these are tested different aspects in which this duality manifests in the universe now the idea in the you in the spiritual path as I mentioned is to move our perception up to the point of unity then we can play with the duality but we can do it from the perception of unity when our perception is rooted in the individuality then we see all in terms of opposition and you know all separation so the idea is to move from the duality to the unity but when we look at the world we can recognize that duality out there so now with that as the philosophical foundation let us explore what a cash-out or these primordial Akasha just as force or energy requires a substantial connection or vehicle of expression so spirit also if it is not to remain an abstraction requires a vehicle through which to manifest you know early in the in the 19th century scientists thought that force and matter were two completely different principles matter was material and force was in material now with quantum physics now we know that force and matter are two aspects of the same reality every force is mediated by some kind of particle every particle is a manifestation of some kind of force so the force cannot manifest unless there is some substance substantial basis and substance cannot manifest without showing the manifestation of certain force so this as you get today to the bottom of each plane you get to the unity that is behind that plane so science is getting very close to the unity on the physical plane so then the the separation between matter and force begins to blur so in the same way he says that just as force requires matter then the spirit require said a body or a vehicle of consciousness to be able to express through it and he says these two principles whether we call them simply spirit and matter or use the more expressive terms as cosmic radiation and cosmic substance these two principles are the Alpha and Omega of being the two facets of the one absolute existence so just as there is a kind of cosmic substance from which everything comes at the beginning or at the root of the universe there is also a cosmic ideation a cosmic intelligence which expresses itself through all this hierarchy of beings that we have explored last week and through us through animals to all the kingdoms any intelligence that we have comes from this Universal Mind we have to be careful not to anthropomorphize the universal mind is not a like an entity that I think is the principle of intelligence that pervades the universe and that manifests in different ways through different beings so in the same way there is a principle of matter or substance that pervades the universe and it manifests in different ways the kind of manifestation we are familiar with is what we call matter which is the physical matter but there are other manifestations this is why we talk about seven planes there are seven different kinds of substances or matter the last one is the one that we call physical but there are more spiritual substances so we read the seven planes which constitute the cosmos and in fact Akasha and six differentiations of it and this same Akasha known to the aah patient and philosophers as either with all these mysterious and occult properties contains in itself the germs of universal creation this upper ether or a thur or Akasha is the celestial virgin and mother of every existence existing form and being from whose bosom as soon as incubated by the Divine Spirit are called into existence matter and life force an action so here you see again the same principle in always present in the Theosophical approach from the unity you have manifestations so from Akasha there are six more plays of differentiation and a Cassius is symbolically said to be the virgin because it's that kind of substance pure substance unmodified that is the root of manifestation from which evolve or take birth all other kinds of matter so in many times you will see that the Asafa cali director which maybe we could relate it with a white light that contains all the colors in itself but only potentially when you see white light you don't see any of the colors you need to run the the white light through a prism for example and then you can see it how those colors differentiate so in the same way akasha in its pure essence contains all the possibilities of matter but none of those are manifested and in the process of manifestation the different aspects appear so we see here there is differentiation through seven planes until we come to the lowest of them which is the physical matter that form our earth so these planes should not be understood that as one being on top of the other the your interpenetrate so we put them one on top of the other just because we have to show them in a two-dimensional drawing and whatever is higher means that is suckler but it's not that reality is layered all these planes are inter penetrating so let's see now the Astra light leaving aside the lowest of these planes which was the physical plane that i showed the earth itself the next lowest is termed the astral light this is defined as the invisible region that surrounds our globe acid does every other every other globe a subtle essence visible only to avoid and I as it inter inter penetrates the grocer forms of matter on our plane it is perceptible only to the clairvoyant who's side is able to pass beyond the external form so interpenetrating everything there is the subtle kind of matter which Blavatsky used to call the astral light that is that is everywhere of course it's not physical matter therefore science cannot detect it but it's a is a matter from the next plane and it has an important impact on the life on Earth and this is why we are exploring this in particular so if we go back to our diagram the astral light would be the plane that is just above the physical and again above not spatially but at the level of subtle tea so there are you can see that there are other kinds of matters the cuttings of mother in between the Akasha and the Astra light on the physical plane so one of the characteristics of this astral light the astral light has been described as the great picture gallery of nature for own it is indelibly impressed every art and thought that occurs in the physical or psychic realm there is a faculty let me say before I go to manifestation or diversity or becoming more and more dense but each plane has the ability of retaining a certain impression of what is going on around and people who develop the ability to to some kind of clairvoyant aveal ability they are able to see events that happened in the past now the way you see this event changes or varies with the plane which you are seeing it the lower planes like the Astra light normally is seen as a picture and it's not quite reliable because the the lower you go in the planes the more distorted that reflection is the higher you go in the place the more accurate the reflection will be so you can see some if you are a clairvoyant you can see some fat from the past but then they will be if you are looking at the astral light they will be fragmentary or distorted or or mixed up with with many things for example some people go to psychics for to doing a reading from a previous life and what most of these people if they are not trained they they don't know is that whatever they may be picking up impressions from any object around so sometimes what they are reading the impressions they are getting which are normally in people as I said unless they are trained in a special kind of yoga these impressions are kind of chaotic and the impressions they might be getting maybe from objects around from the clothing that you have from the physical matter that you are wearing you know the atoms of your body were perhaps in a tiger before you were born and now you are born these and you attract these matters and they will tell you in your previous life you were a tiger so there is a question with this since everything around keeps a record of of whatever that matter went through and there is a whole science to attune to what particular record on what particular kind of matter you want to look that is a very complex factor but most psychic psychics don't know about that so you go if you go for a reading you don't know what you get you know provided that the person is really clear volley and some other people either just imagine it or are just you know fraud but if the person is really a clairvoyant unless that person is well trained you never know what the source what they are picking up so it's important to know about all this Madame Blavatsky draws a parallel between the invisible record made by the camera you know it's invisible and as there has been no appreciable molecular disturbance the only inference possible is that these images have been produced by the invisible universal force the ether or astral light so at the time idea is that many of the causes are already on the astral light and they fix how it is going to be worked up are they are too and you can see them but the further you see in the future the more difficult it is to say whether that that is going to happen because new causes are constantly being added so things may change between the time where you saw the record how it was working out at the moment and a time when that actually happens so that's why the further you go in the future the more difficult it is to be accurate but all this has to do with you know the possibility of seeing has to do with the existence of of the astral light a question here does this mean that every thought every act of mine lasts forever and can affect in a good or bad way others long into the future yeah that is a good question yes and no I mean everything is is recorded and that that that is what people who really can see the the Astra or the astral I the Akashic records they can they can see how people who were involved in a particular situation what they felt what they thought so it is a strange-quality or you know feature of the universe but that is that is something that these clairvoyance you know they all agree that that exists so all our thoughts and emotions are recorded somewhere now they don't necessarily affect the future forever well they do in a certain way because they they are the ones that determine what you are right now and what you are right now will affect the future but there are causes that takes some time to manifest and once they manifest then they are they are not active anymore it's like you throw a ball up and if somebody is just looking straight and cannot see the ball that is coming down and you say there is a ball that is going to hit you in your head and then that happens that person will think that you are some kind of Prophet well you only saw the actual causes and effects are worth taking place once the ball falls that chain of causation is over so in the same way we can see things are about to happen if we can see on the inner planes and it's not too different from what I just explained but one dose once those things happen that chain realm of consciousness actually but memory is something that has puzzled people many times our scientists so memory is to the student of all philosophies merely a name to express that power which man to the vast repository where the records of every man's life as well as every pulsation of the visible called cosmos are stored up for all eternity so the idea that when we remember something what we are actually doing is automatically looking at the at the astral record of of what we went through when we do something and we produce all these records the there is like a kind of magnetic link to those records that make make it very easy for our is to to look at those records and the experience that we described in in looking at these records is that of remembering now when a person wants to look at records where there are no magnetic links with them then it is more difficult because it's something that our personal consciousness has not gone through so you have to develop these dis clairvoyance but when it is a question of your own records then the you can you can many times go to them and and that is what we call remembering something now again there are many things that we don't remember and there are many things we remember in a distorted way because it all depends on how well this mechanism of with India this Astrid the tablets on the Astra light as Blavatsky would call them how well that mechanism is working in us of course a physical brain has to be in a good state of health to be able to bring the image down to the physical level if the physical brain is not is damaged then then the the image that that consciousness is seeing cannot be brought to the brain but the the idea is that memory is not within the brain memories just the connection the ability to read the records that we went through and those people who have this photographic memory our people that have developed or that were born for some reason with a very very good skill to read the records so they they actually can see the image of whatever they went through because they can they are they are seen clearly or more clear than than many others the record that is related to that so it's actually photographic memory is quite you know quite right that name because you are seeing the photograph of what you went through or what your weight or what you saw so that is a just you know it appears on them under many guises and the terms used to define it will differ according to the particular aspect under consideration it is the universal space in which lies inherent the eternal ideation of the universe in its ever-changing aspects on the plains of matter so that is a the philosophical view space is not empty it's not this this void what we call space is actually this substance that that we are calling Akasha here so space / substance are the same principle this is not too deep different from what what Einstein proposed you know several decades or after blah bosque talked about this because when Einstein shows space it also shows with some kind of of structure you can then displace the spells can be deformed you can you know you go there are different ways of
